One may not pay attention to specific idols.
Idols should not be the subject of our speech or thoughts, and one shouldn't gaze upon them.
One should not read their book nor investigate how they are worshipped.
Learning Halachot about idols, is allowed.
Applies to everybody, everywhere, always.

While the literal meaning of idolatry may not be something that we much faced with today; in another sense, we have much idolatry in abundance in terms of today's American Idols, Hollywood stars, etc. Besides the Issur of following in the ways of Goyim, or the Issur of praising Goyim for their talents, there is also an Inyan of not letting the topics of the Goyishe world as seen on T.V, internet, etc. be the subject of our speech or thoughts, and our time is more better spent on spiritual matters, which will be the only matters that will count to our benefit for eternity.
