It's a Mitzva to be in awe of the Bet Hamikdash - the Holy Temple.
Our synagogues are considered to be miniature temples.
One may not make merry in them. Idle chatter is also forbidden.
One may not sleep in them.
It's a Mitzva to treat them with awe and respect.
Applies to everybody, always, everywhere
Pasuk: "and fear my sanctuary" (Vayikra 19:30)
